dc.description.abstract This essay explores the ways in which certain kinds of humour, in particular kitsch, hyperbole and reversal are used to reference older British cultural forms such as the castle and folk tale. The article goes on to argue that these references have the effect of legitimating an identity position that has long been the butt of Australian humour and ignored by serious artists, that of the white, suburbanite. en
