Equally enduring and elusive, this most famous of Pauline passages has become synonymous with the hazards of interpretation and with the concept of enigma itself (the Latin speculum in aenigmate translates literally as Nin an enigmatic mirrorO). The seldom-commented-on appearance of this passage from PaulOs letter to the Corinthians (I Cor. 13:12) in FrameOs 1965 novel, The Adaptable Man creates an intriguing critical scenario. Its presence encourages the critic to describe the text as NenigmaticO at the same time as the passage (in keeping, as we shall see, with that description) prescribes the criticOs reading of the text. ...
