Abstract:
Argues that several passages from the Bible, especially from the Exodus and Jeremiah, underlie key poetic moments in the rhetoric of Othello, shaping the depiction of him as an "outsider" or desert-dweller. Discusses the implications of these passages for a view of how SHakespeare responded to, adapted and deployed Biblical poetry in his work. The volume is in the prestigious series "Early Modern Literature in History".
