Abstract:
The sense of sacredness can be triggered by external phenomenon, in response a heartfelt sensation is evoked. What generate this awe inspiring feeling is a vastly spread, yet complex and delicate field of study. The wider issues of community faith etc. are not discussed. This thesis looks simply at the light. This paper is a contribution towards identifying the phenomenon or catalyst for the sense of sacredness in an architectural lighting atmosphere. A sense of awe and reverence can be felt in some religious buildings and institutional buildings of non religious function. This study’s centre of attention is on the illuminated conditions within such space, which cause/influences towards ones spiritual awareness. The thesis will look into the philosophical positions of four Modern Architects and the manifestation of their ideas to their architectural work. The discovery of the factors in creating a sense of sacredness in architecture involves images. Some are drawn by the architects some are photos and many are the authors own work drawn to understand the lighting environment in a sacred space. Five Case Studies selected to demonstrates sacred atmosphere as follow.
