Abstract:
Beaches in New Zealand were early settled and are still often places of encounter: they are haunted sites. One figure who haunts the beach is the Maori trickster hero-god Maui. Mahy's revision of a bundle of Western generic conventions from Gothic fiction alludes to Maui the trickster's life and death, and in many other ways marks its origins as distinctively local.
