Abstract:
When people find themselves in an unfamiliar environment they crave that which is familiar. Youths are thrust into a culturally determined context; where the public's image of the everyday has existing embodied meanings which conditions our consciousness, and self-definition, therefore, there are certain reactions expected to occur. For refugees and migrants, youths in particular, to arrive in a new unfamiliar country, often with a different background of language and social prompts, it is a difficult struggle to evaluate which public image has similar embodiment and which public image are dissimilar so requires a dialogue to transpire for a compromise. To negotiate boundaries, subsequently, the public's image and their image become successfully synchronised. A fresh familiarity with the unknown environment is slowly discovered by using boundaries as stimulus for interaction. Architecture is a social responsibility that should be implemented to respond to social change, and assist in bridging the gap between marginalised communities and major communities. The current urban fabric consists of boundary conditions that are embodied with connotations of limitation, division and containment, resulting in an experience within architecture that will be abrupt and not allow an individual the opportunity to question, discover, learn and conclude, differently the extents of the defined boundary, which will now remain unfamiliar. Whereas, if the boundary conditions are gradations that introduce moments of interference to stimulate an opportunity, and discovery in the journey, for dialogue to occur between individuals. It is though this act of voluntary discussion that our public image will evolve as the individuals will begin to view opinion from a different perspective and re-establish their own thinking. The boundary conditions embodied meaning of limitations will be diffuse as the boundary no longer acts as a division, however instead, generates moments of stimulated inter-communication to happen. The underlying objective of this study is to stimulate an initial dialogue between youths; therefore, it stands to reason that a crucial step for the research is to investigate different conditions of boundaries beginning the foundation of dialogue with youths in the city. The conclusive study will develop and interrupt real notions youths have shared into a place within the city for youths to discover.
