In this thesis information processing in four different paced serial tasks is examined experimentally in detail. In each task, a trial lasts typically five minutes. The information processing operations including stimulus input and response output take a few seconds to complete. Responses analyzed are verbal, and the input is auditory in each instance. Mathematical models have been developed to account for group performance and for performance of individual subjects. The former permits performance along the trial to be examined and the latter permits psychological processes underlying performance on these tasks to be specified.
A discrete Markov model was found to represent performance in runs of responses and a time dependent model recovery from interruptions. Interference in retrieval was found to account for interruptions in performance leading to response omissions. Errors were found to be mistakes in retrieval. Individual strategies were seen to be important and introspective reports correlated well with performance. The component model for performance in runs of responses was compatible with psychological theory for short-term processing, however this theory, at present, cannot account for recovery from interruptions.
Implications of these findings for management of concussed patients and for further research aimed at a cognitive approach to assessing the various stages in information processing are also discussed. |
