Abstract:
The article focuses on the career of American gossip columnist Hedda Hopper. She was known within the U.S. motion picture industry as deeply bigoted, but she eschewed virulent expressions of white racism in public. Throughout her career Hopper strongly endorsed films and film roles that maintained racial stereotyping, and she vigorously supported African American actors and actresses who tended to play these roles. The intertwining of politics and popular culture was characteristic of her writings throughout her career.
