Abstract:
This chapter examines the coverage of Chinese in Māori media from the 19th century to the early 21st century. The media discussed includes the Māori language newspapers of the 19th and early 20th century, the Department of Māori Affairs magazine Te Ao Hou, the more recent Mana and Tū mai; Radio New Zealand and the Iwi Radio Network; Television New Zealand Māori programmes and the Māori Television Service. The earlier material includes a number of defamatory articles about Chinese. It improved in the early 20th century but then deteriorated later part of that century. Māori Television and the more recent Mana and Tū Mai magazines have provided more balanced and positive commentary.
