Abstract:
This chapter offers an overview of the skilled and business migration programmes in New Zealand that have been responsible for transforming drastically the country's migrant makeup since 1986. While the recent Chinese transmigrants were relatively young, affluent and mobile compared with their predecessors, their settlements and incorporation into New Zealand society are not completely smooth and without difficulties. Settlement issues such as those of employment and "astronaut" family arrangements among those migrating from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan were particularly highlighted.
