Yeongeogwon dongpoadongui hyoyuljeok hangul machumbeop hakseubeul wihan gicho yeongu (A Preliminary Study of Efficient Learning of Korean Orthography for Korean Children living in English Speaking Countries)

Abstract

Although orthography is considered to be of concern only in limited areas of accuracy at word level, the accurate orthography of young Korean speakers overseas, especially in English speaking countries, requires more attention. This is because they have the worst Korean spelling and find this to be one of the most difficult and burdensome areas. Nonetheless, they give the highest priority to improving their spelling and writing skills. As a preliminary study for developing an efficient instruction method of Korean orthography for overseas Korean children, this article aims to determine their proficiency in Korean spelling and to identify frequently misspelt words and fossilized words. This was achieved through an analysis of the results of a dictation experiment given to Korean children attending a Saturday Korean community school in Auckland, New Zealand, in 2006. Several facts relating to their frequent misspellings were also found.
