Abstract:
This paper forms part of a symposium (with Mark Johnston of Princeton University) about the ontology and (particularly) the epistemology of persons and of the criteria for personal identity. I show that earlier work of Johnston's on these topics fails to successfully establish his view against either of its chief rivals, Animalism, and psychological reductionism. I defend mentalistic individuation and psychological reductionism against Johnston's attacks.
