dc.description.abstract The toki poutangata in the attached photograph was carved with stone tools by Wiremu Puke and lashed and decorated by Dante Bonica. It was made in memory of the carver's late father, Hare Puke, kaumātua rangatira of Tainui and a foundation trustee of Sports Waikato. It is now awarded yearly as a supreme leadership trophy for Waikato Sports and business enterprise. Dante advised on sourcing and procuring of the pounamu from Ngāi Tahu in the south Island. He made the three ply muka braid for the fine lashing of the blade and feather bundles to the carved handles and prepared the decorative bundles of feathers on this ceremonial Tokipoutangata adze. en
