dc.description.abstract	It has been nearly twenty years since Robert Gentleman and I began work on the R system. Although R has become a much more fully featured and well rounded system, its central core remains largely unchanged. With the benefit of hindsight it is possible look at how well this core design has held up, at ways in which it could be improved and whether or not this could lead to a successful new system.	en
