Abstract:
John McCaffery and Judy McFall- McCaffery from the University of Aucklandare at the forefront of a community led research based struggle to reform the teaching of Pasifika languages in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.They aregue that the current NZ Curriculum area of Learning Languages has an outdated research base and urgently needs to be updated. This presentation presents NZ and international research evidence that for languages to be successfully acquired they need to be taught as subjects and used as mediums of instruction. This presentation has implications for the teaching of te reo Māori in schools as well.Published on line following Conference
