Abstract:
Inner city living can be much more sustainable and economical compared to developing fringe land for further suburban sprawl. Especially given the shift in demographics, which suggests there is an incongruent relationship between the housing stock and the population - two-thirds of the Christchurch housing stock is comprised of three bedroom single detached houses, yet the populations demographics shows a greater increase singles and couples without children. To address these changing demographics, a new flexible housing type that can be modified depending on the dweller's needs is proposed. It is a modular system and can be deployed to suit different sites. The aim is to address the urgent housing crisis with an efficient adaptable housing system, which at once can address the influx of workers, but in the future could adapt to changing demands.
