Abstract:
This thesis further develops the theory of single and multichannel sound systems, with an emphasis on multichannel room enhancement systems. The gain in sound level of sound systems is determined using a mean power analysis, and reverberation time gains are
determined using Sabine's theory and electrical analogy techniques. A more detailed assessment of reverberation decays is carried out by the experimental determination of damping distributions. The statistics of room transfer functions are reviewed, and new results obtained for single channel sound systems, and systems which contain secondary reverberation systems. The stability of sound systems is developed using these statistical results and comparisons with previous results are made. Finally, the equalisation of sound systems and the measurement of colouration artefacts are considered.
