This research aims to identify and explore the spaces where dramaturgy and choreography meet in performance research. It investigates specific dramaturgical interventions within choreographic practice, leading to an ongoing critical and reflexive discourse into processes for developing narrative and thematic content. This study employs a practice-led methodology. It draws on key scholars from the fields of dramaturgy, performance studies, practice-led research and dance studies to contextualize the way in which studio practice is positioned as a core site of knowing. The practice-led element of this study involves a series of workshops in which different approaches to choreographic dramaturgy are explored. Key strategies include: 1. Collaboration with a dramaturge for outside eye feedback. 2. Employing the use of camera/video documentation to lend an outside eye 3. Exploring the choreographers’ ability to act as dramaturge when creating and performing in solo work The studio research element of this study culminated in a performance work that was developed through experimentation with dramaturgy as both a way of working as a solo choreographer, and a collaborative way of working with a collaborator employed specifically to offer outside eye feedback. Currently in NZ dramaturgy is very rarely taught as part of higher education in dance, and although the term dramaturgy is becoming familiar in many contemporary dance contexts, there remains very little examination of what this means and how, specifically, dramaturgical interventions contribute to contemporary dance practice. Through the critical-creative process of developing Room-Spine, this research presents a number of specific dramaturgical approaches relevant to a wide range of choreographic approaches, contextualised by critical discourse in dramaturgy, dance and performance studies. |
