Abstract:
The Library Evaluation and Online booking system (LEO) is an online course booking system. It enables University of Auckland (UoA) staff and students to book a library course online. Library course presenters can check bookings and contact students who have booked for the course before or after sessions. LEO was designed and developed collaboratively by the Digital Services and Information Skills teams in 2002. It has been in use for four years and has been continually improved. It is now a heavily used system which enables students to select courses sorted by appropriate faculty or campus, to locate the course venue by clicking an online map and to receive an email reminder a day before the course. LEO offers an opportunity for students to submit their personal comments, learning needs and expectations before attending the class. Presenter can view suggestions online or in the form of an email that arrives immediately after the suggestion was entered. Students are encouraged to fill in an online evaluation form in LEO after the session and can add their comments about possible improvements. LEO is a sophisticated database used by all UoA Library teaching staff. It enables them to add, edit or cancel sessions at any time and view their weekly or yearly teaching timetables online. The system sends automatic email remainders to all presenters a day before the teaching class and enables them to view a list of names and profiles of students who have booked for the session. It also enables course presenters to generate a student evaluation report for a particular session or a course. LEO can be used to by individual teaching staff members or team leaders to generate different levels of statistical reports, e.g. team report, individual presenter report. LEO plays an important role in providing library services to the whole UoA community. It improves the Library’s profile and enables teaching staff to have closer contact with students. The LEO teaching reports allow course presenters to analyse student feedback so as to improve teaching quality.
