Abstract:
This thesis looks at whether KiwiSaver should be prudentially regulated or whether the current level of supervision is appropriate and finds that there is room to improve KiwiSaver’s regulatory environment to ensure better protection of KiwiSaver members’ interests. Compared to the regulatory environments found overseas, particularly Australia, KiwiSaver is not particularly highly regulated. More regulation would help KiwiSaver achieve its key objective of encouraging saving for retirement and transferring the burden of providing an income in retirement off the state and onto individuals.
