The aim of the research is to begin to create an understanding of how the interdisciplinary aspect of collaborative design through theory translates into specific cases in architectural practice, and why interdisciplinarity in collaboration is required to achieve sustainable outcomes in design in its holistic form. This is achieved by discussing various components of collaboration such as creativity and public participation at various levels, both in theory and in practice. Existing literature is used to construct a context in which the case study sits, and inform questions addressed by the case study. The case study consists of interviews with professionals involved in the collaborative team behind the design and building of the Waiheke Island Library. The study ultimately addresses the changing nature of collaboration, reveals the importance of flexibility in a collaborative effort, highlights the importance of finding commonality or a common goal in an interdisciplinary team, particularly in order to reach sustainable design outcomes, and identifies gaps in existing literature in regards to interdisciplinarity in collaborative design practice. Keywords: interdisciplinary, collaborative design, architectural practice, creativity, public participation, sustainable outcomes |
