Abstract:
This thesis aims to assess the significance of ancient Jewish texts that relate to Matthew 22:30. The texts I will be examining discuss both separately and combined the topics of Sadducees, angels, righteous people, and resurrection as these are all concepts in Matthew 22:30. The method used is a historico-literary approach that concentrates on how some Jewish literature functioned in the time of Matthew’s gospel. The findings of this research will conclude that Matthew 22:30 was not a novel concept compared to other Jewish literary traditions. Furthermore, the conclusion of this thesis will suggest that the literary purpose of Matthew 22:30 was to reveal that the Sadducees could have been provoked by Jesus’ response to them within this tradition.
