Abstract:
This research aims to gather the opportunities of creating sustainable cities in the near future in the urban context of developing countries, the context of study here being Nepal and its urban areas. Three fundamental parameters for sustainability economic, environmental and social have been identified and discussed in three different scales regional, urban and architectural. In order to find the opportunities of RE considering the above mentioned parameters, a study of physical and chemical properties of Rammed earth, the ancient history linked with earth construction and the other variables that determine the built environment in regard to the context of study have been carried out. After discussing all these framework, we have come to know that, Rammed Earth has significant opportunities to be developed as an alternative to the contemporary construction practice for the construction of small to medium scale construction that not only include a single entity of Rammed earth but also a larger cluster of settlement in the immediate periphery of the urban centre.
