Abstract:
The Lab: at the 5th Auckland Triennial Edited by Kathy Waghorn Designed by Index This publication archives the three-month-long laboratory that inhabited the Auckland Art Gallery during the 5th Auckland Triennial, "If you were to live here..." curated by Hou Hanru. With projects by The University of Auckland, Unitec and AUT University, The Lab was a platform for research, proposition and public debates on local architectural and urban issues. Each of the five projects that inhabited the gallery are represented in the publication, along with an interview with Hou Hanru, an essay by Lab designer Mike Davis, and texts by Kathy Waghorn, Emma Ng, Jade Kake, Monique Redmond and Andrew Barrie. The graphic designers Index operated in The Lab as designers-on-demand; implementing the Triennial Lab signage system, printing event sheets, and manually updating the wall panels. Some of the printed outcomes of this experience are reproduced in the publication as fragments of their documentary role. Each copy of the publication is fitted with a hand screen-printed cover and set of risograph-printed posters. The 5th Auckland Triennial took place from 10 May-11 August, 2013, at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki, ARTSPACE, The Film Archive, Auckland War Memorial Museum, Fresh Gallery Otara, George Fraser Gallery, Gus Fisher Gallery, ST PAUL St Gallery and Silo 6, Silo Park. It was organised by the Auckland Art Gallery with support from Triennial partner AUT University, patrons Sue Fisher Art Trust, Chartwell, Auckland Contemporary Art Trust and Patrons of the Triennial, and Creative New Zealand.
