Abstract:
A discussion of what the design of Shakespeare's plays as scripts and acting occasions for "players" owes to earlier, especially late medieval, practice and to older theories of drama as "play" rather than "art". Invited contribution for Special Issue of leading journal from Duke University Press on the topic of "Medieval Shakespeare".
