Polynesian architecture is often characterised by notions such as openness, exposed beams, pole construction, vibrant colours and lightness to name a few. But limiting the scope of Polynesian architecture to such labels is problematic: When architects and engineers are commissioned to design and build ‘fale’ emphasis is given to producing the shape of a fale using pure “structural logic” (McKay 2005:33) and regulatory documents. But what of indigenous structural logic and architectonics? One ‘layer’ of Polynesian architecture often overlooked is the tectonic composition necessary for the structural operation of these (Pacific) buildings within the context of tradition. This study will investigate the tectonic layers beneath the shell of the Samoan fale. Architecture in Samoa including construction detailing is an established tradition, and as with any tradition of significance in Samoa it has a citable genealogy ‐ a mafua’aga or origin. An investigation is undertaken through case studies of existing fale, an examination of current literature and finally the construction of a full scale fale on an actual site in Samoa. New knowledge is gained into not only the operation of the fale but also its feasibility for construction in the present day building industry. |
