dc.description.abstract This thesis explores how temporary public art was employed, by public as well as private agencies, in the urban environments of Auckland and Christchurch, between 2010 and 2013. This period of significant change in both cities altered the way art practice and policy developed and had an impact on the ways that public art was valued. To frame these activities in a broader international art historical context, consideration is also given to the social and technological changes which took place in the early 21st century. Such developments led to greater flexibility around the implementation of public art, the rise of temporary projects and activitybased forms of public art. City-based case studies and examples offer some insights into why these changes occurred and include background information on each council’s activity during the period. The discussion concludes with a consideration of the challenges around evaluating temporary art and the implications this has for documentation and record keeping. en
