Abstract:
The underlying theme of my work in engages with the question of how are our ideologies constructed through various influences of origin, environment and societal involvement? How are these ideologies capable of being combined or strengthen to cause a framework which is made up of our beliefs and values systems, though not concrete in nature our underlying ideas require a close inspection in order to be better understood and possibly re-evaluated. By combining ‘ordinary’ building materials with materials generally considered synonymous with artistic practises while also drawing inspiration from designed home décor objects and various display techniques. I hope to centre this enquiry in a form of hybridity where visual languages from different domains can be combined fluidly. Through the use of these materials that make up much of the physically constructed environments, though ubiquitous in daily life are seldom left exposed or undecorated. I have experimented with how materials might have the ability to function as allegorical signifiers; so that simple structures made from unlikely materials or are positioned in unusual ways are capable of drawing on different frames of reference while also being in an uncomfortable dynamic of being resolved yet incomplete as objects. I consider this to be somewhat akin to how our ideas, beliefs and values are capable of remaining somewhat incomplete and fluid so that they can be re-evaluated in a case-by-case scenario when encountering with new information.
