dc.description.abstract There is increasing national concern regarding the educational achievement of Maori in New Zealand. Recent international studies have highlighted Maori mathematics under-achievement in particular. This paper discusses appropriate teaching and learning practices, ethno-mathematics, constructivist approaches, the development of classroom culture, increasing teacher and learner expectation, and assessment practices that will improve the mathematics achievement of these students. en
