This thesis analyses dairy conditions in the Canterbury region and considers a projected future scenario, specifically in 2061. The thesis seeks to answer a question; how can negative consequences, due to future intensive dairy farming, be mitigated or prevented in New Zealand? In the last ten years, New Zealand dairy products have been welcomed by consumers around the world. Dairy as a major commodity exhibits connective influence on the economy, natural environment and public health. However, behind the success of the New Zealand dairy industry, there are potential threats waiting to affect our life in the future. With regard to minimising this threat potential, the thesis studies dairy-related economic, environmental and public health issues in aid of a proposal towards a ‘Canterbury symbiotic dairy farm’. This would allow mixed farming and manufacturing to enhance economic growth, reduce environmental pressures and diversify health options to the public. Ultimately, I hope this symbiotic dairy farming concept could benefit the whole nation, and uses the tested experiences to other places in the world for achieve butter urban resilience. |
