Abstract:
Slip line field theory and the upper bound theorem are used to analyze the problem of two monolithic ceramic components bonded by a ductile metal interlayer. The presence of even a small fraction of debonded region is shown to have a significant effect on the performance of the joint. The required integrity and dimensions of the interlayer material are then found, to obtain a particular load-carrying capacity.
