dc.description.abstract Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the People's Republic of China and South Korea in 1992, large numbers of Chinese Koreans (Chaoxianzu in Chinese; Chosŏnjok in Korean) have re-migrated to South Korea. The construction of music in the Korean diaspora has privileged Chinese Korean musicians in South Korea. This study illustrates how Korean musicians in China have established themselves professionally through introduction and negotiation of their musical identity. This negotiation has occurred within the context of the complex contention of citizenship and ethnicity of Chaoxianzu migrants against social prejudice and alienation. en
