Successful students are often good at reviewing and evaluating their own performance, as well as that of their peers. Self and peer assessment are therefore important parts of students' study strategies, allowing them to take greater control of their learning. Research has also shown that self and peer assessment are skills that students may learn and improve, which means that an increased focus on student involvement in assessment may be of benefit cognitively and meta-cognitively. In this seminar, Gavin Brown (Associate Professor at the University of Auckland, New Zealand and visiting scholar at University of Umea, Sweden) presents contemporary research on self and peer assessment. He draws our attention especially to the important inter- and intra-personal dynamics that potentially invalidate self and peer assessment techniques. |
