The narrative-architectural world of the 18th century Chinese novel, The Dream of the Red Chamber, is the focus of this study. The novel presents two contrasting sets of architectural spaces that induce lifestyles distinct from each other – the constrained lifestyle within the axial-symmetrical mansion, placed against the poetic, carefree lifestyle within the freeform Suzhou Garden.1 This thesis is an explorative research-design project based on the spaces that are depicted in the architectural-narratives. Initial conceptual explorations included illustrating and abstracting excerpts from the novel. The outcome of this methodology was a rich array of spaces that embodied narrative energy in form, ambience, and colour. This presented a departure point from only relying on the writing – the generated conceptual imageries took the project into another realm. Taking these conceptual imageries, and a concept crucial to the architectural world of the novel – that two worlds exist in contrast: the socially “contaminated” and constrained state of the outside world; and the pure, poetic state of life within the garden Da-Guan-Yuan - a speculative design project was briefed. The project sets out a large compound as the manifestation of the world of the mansion, which is to be placed adjacent to a landscaped area manifesting the world of the garden. A special focus was placed on viewing the architectural framework as the narrative framework – the other key concept influencing the thesis. |
