Abstract:
History displays that the built environment has evolved since life started, and has moulded into various architectural styles with unique and distinct features. Architecture and Interiors, being the most important part of this built environment share features that establish a relationship. The purpose of this research was to observe the relationship between architecture and interiors, and to identify the evolution of this relationship. Also, the research sets out to find the current issues and challenges that are responsible for this evolution. The research begins with exploring the relationship between these two aspects of the architectural styles of various periods. The literature section identifies the styles that were observed from the known past, and continues to describe their characteristic features. The exterior and interior characteristics of these styles are investigated, and relationship between them are identified. The research continues to explore the evolution of these areas as a profession, and identifies the pace of development. It also investigates the evolution of the roles and responsibilities of the professionals in these areas. The study thus discusses the current issues and challenges responsible for this evolution, and identifies the reasons for that development. The thesis concludes by explaining how the relationship between interior and exterior has evolved, and why the evolution persist.
