Abstract:
The paper is a critical appraisal of research on contrastive rhetoric(CR), with a focus on the methods adopted, major findings, implications, and the shift of directions in empirical studies conducted overseas and in China since Kaplan’s seminal work(1966). It critically sums up studies into the rhetorical organization of L2 written texts across English and Chinese rhetorical traditions. It is hoped that the paradigm shift in intercultural rhetoric and interaction advocated by leading CR scholars overseas will enrich our understanding of CR and its recent development. It is expected that our review of CR studies and findings will continue to provide theoretical insights into CR research and pedagogical implications for enhancing L2 writing practice in China.
