Abstract:
Various rating tools are now in use in the UK, Sweden, the US, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand – and their use is expanding. In 2003 CEEQUAL was launched in the UK; in 2011 the international version of CEEQUAL followed; and then in 2012 came CEEQUAL Version 5 with a much stronger emphasis on project strategy. In 2012 we saw Greenroads and Envision launched in the US, and the Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) tool launched in Australia. 2014 saw the use of Greenroads and IS on projects in New Zealand. This paper explores the development and potential application of these rating tools in New Zealand. It presents insights from the academic literature on the use and the adequacy of the tools, considers developments of the tools to-date and discusses known gaps, emerging opportunities and possible future developments.
