dc.description.abstract This work contributes to building a complete theory of practical rationality based on the works of Elizabeth Anscombe and Philippa Foot. It includes an in-depth investigation into the concept of a reason for acting, as well as a discussion of the concept of goodness and how it relates to human character and action. Along the way, I argue that an adequate theory of practical rationality has to bring these two areas of inquiry together, for an account of the quality of reasons depends on an account of the quality of human character and action. I also show that Foot’s work does not fully explain how reasons for acting serve to produce and influence action, and I attempt to improve her account with the help of Anscombe’s work on stopping modals. en
