Abstract:
The recognition of historical and testimonial value of an historic building is part of sustainable design process, aimed to preserve all pre-existing characters. Currently, the main rating systems for the green buildings that include design, construction and management, do not provide specific requirements, able to consider historical value's issues, as well as the effectiveness of a restoration strategy aimed to valorize and, at the same time, improve the performance of heritage. In this scenario, the Green Building Council Italia has developed a new rating system, in order to certify buildings under renovation or restoration, called GBC Historic BuildingTM. The new rating system is based on the LEED®'s framework, and, specifically, on LEED® Italia 2009 Nuove Costruzioni e Ristrutturazioni to which new requirements have been added to support the achievement of sustainability goals through the processes of conservation. The paper presents the new rating system through the sustainability actions included in its requirements, necessary for the evaluation of retrofit strategies on the historical heritage.
