Abstract:
This thesis proposes the reactivation of neglected spaces within cities to prevent urban sprawling, the crisis that most developed countries are experimenting because of reasons such as the increase of population. This thesis addresses the crisis in three research stages: 1. Statistical research on the site and its reasons for urban sprawling. 2. Research into theories and precedents to provide insights on the occupation of space which are later applied into the design project. 3. A research into leisure parks which is the typology used in this project. Urban Sprawling results in the occurrence of suburbs which leads to the dependency of transport and the loss of farmland and forests to residential areas as cities continue to sprawl. It threatens the world’s climate and the nation’s agriculture and environmental sector. This thesis also discusses the dependency of private transport which leads to traffic congestion and sustainability issues. This thesis suggests a solution for Auckland, New Zealand’s crisis of urban sprawling by proposing a monorail system and a region-wide amusement park in the neglected spaces in the surrounding suburbs.
