Abstract:
Our laboratory has been exploring the micro-anatomy and physiology of the nor- mal and diseased human cornea. The aim of this project was to develop custom software to handle the diverse 2D/3D microscopic data generated. Corneal tissue was fluores- cently multi-labelled, imaged with a confo- cal microscope, processed using standard personal computers, and custom database and viewing software was developed for data organisation and display. We used the software to build a large database of images, which has helped us answer a num- ber of questions about the structure and function of the normal and diseased cornea. This approach provides a powerful and cost- effective solution for working with multi- labelled multi-dimensional visual datasets, which may be applicable to other imaging situations.
