dc.description.abstract Te Kohanga Reo as a context for language learning and teaching was examined in a descriptive study using a mixed methodology of interviewing, structured and unstructured observation and participation. Firstly the role of language routines, interactions and activities in providing and facilitating conditions for language acquisition was examined. Secondly, the role of Te Kohanga Reo as a socializing and enculturating environment for language was addressed. Following preliminary observations in one Te Kohanga Reo, three children were regularly observed over an extended period of time. Observational data was analysed to provide measures of the complexity of their language. Various language focussing strategies were observed being utilized as teaching strategies. Children were exposed" and involved in a number of types of communicative interactions. Activities, routines and interactions were identified which provided linguistic information to the language learners and expressed cultural concepts and practices encompassed in Tikanga Maori. It is argued that Te Kohanga Reo provides a complex and supportive context for language learning and for learning the values, beliefs and practices embodied in the kaupapa of Te Kohanga Reo and held by Maori. en
