Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to update, synthetically, through literature review, the food and nutritional scenario of the indigenous population in Brazil, and later, reflect on the necessity of nutritionists in this field. High prevalence of stunting in childhood and excess weight that increases with increased age, are highlighted. Relevant presence of food with a high content of salt, sugar and fats, and the restriction on traditional food practices is also recorded. The necessity for nutritionists in the field of research is evident, particularly in the refinement of methods for quantitative evaluation of food. More qualified professionals are required in indigenous health services to construct food and nutritional interventions together with the communities. The importance of the inclusion of this topic in the nutrition graduation courses in the country is highlighted.
