Rattus exulans (PEALE), a murid rodent, is distributed widely throughout the Malayo-Pacific region, New Zealand being the southernmost limit of its range. Commonly known as "kiore", "native rat", "Polynesian rat" or "Maori rat", Re exulans was introduced to New Zealand by the Maori (WILLIAMS 1973). Observations made by the first European naturalists and settlers of New Zealand indicate that kiore were widespread and abundant throughout both North and South Islands.
During the nineteenth century, numbers declined and the species became less widespread (ATKINSON 1973). Today R. exulans is largely confined to offshore islands and is known to survive only in the Fiordland
region of mainland New Zealand (WATSON 1956). However further extensive surveys may yet reveal the presence of kiore in other restricted areas of the two main islands. |
