Abstract:
The aims of this paper are to: • reflect briefly on selected aspects of multiple ethnic identification in relation t o how multiple identities have been conceptualised historically and within the context of colonisation in New Zealand; • map the different approaches that have been used for categorisation and output of data on multiple ethnicities in official statistics in New Zealand; • discuss approaches to multiple ethnicity data collection and output in key health data sets and analyses; and, • consider the implications of different approaches to multiple ethnicities for measuring and monitoring Māori health and ethnic inequalities.
