dc.description.abstract |
Equity in achievement between ethnicities should be achievable but there is still disparity in the levels of achievement of Pasifika students in both high and low decile schools. Few studies have focussed on Pasifika students in high decile schools who generally achieve better than their contemporaries in low decile schools but generally lower than their New Zealand European and Asian peers at the same school. This qualitative study examines the strategies employed by a Decile 9 integrated Catholic girls’ school to support the achievement of their Pasifika students and records the Pasifika students’ perceptions of those strategies. As a small minority group in a high decile school the Pasifika students at this school face a unique set of challenges. This study found strategies that acknowledged these students’ ethnic identity were most beneficial to their achievement. There were a large number of strategies focussed on the participation and engagement of Pasifika students and the role of Māori and Pasifika Student Coordinator was central to these. The students cited their relationships with their teachers as hugely influential on their ability to learn as was the ability of teachers to respond to the needs of individual students. This study contributes to the existing knowledge base about factors that contribute to existing inequities and how these can be addressed. |
