dc.description.abstract |
Language plays an important role in our daily lives and is an effective communicative tool. Children are amazingly adept at learning words very early in development. Numerous factors have been identified that shape children’s word learning. One factor that has been shown to be particularly important for children’s word learning is their early interactions with their caregivers. Caregivers provide a number of different cues that children use to help them learn words. Although much is known about the cues that children use to learn words, very little is known about how these factors unfold in real-time during typical mother-infant word learning interactions. Additionally, very little is known about whether the behaviour during such interactions is unique to specific mother-infant dyads, or if general interaction styles transcend across mother-infant dyads, and across development. The present research addresses this void in the literature by examining mother-infant behaviours during two novel object label teaching contexts across two time points. A microdynamic approach was adopted for the coding of mother-infant behaviours. Implications of the findings include providing new insights into the dynamics of early word learning contexts. These insights can be used to develop one of the first comprehensive, evidence-based models of word learning. |
