History has tarnished the word "decoration" with an ugly brush. It is my experience as an artist, an interior designer and a consumer of interior commodities that the word and its family of extensions (decorating, décor, decorator, decorative) - is negative. Designers and artists appear to actively distance themselves and their work from the concept of "decoration" in an effort to elevate their creative efforts beyond such potentially damaging associations. As an appreciator of beauty and visual pleasure in art and interiors, I am curious to understand why this is so. |
