This thesis critically examines nostalgia and sentimentality, where memory intersects with these fields of thought. This thesis also studies silence in architecture. Silence is defined through four different aspects, memory, emotion, spirit and self-awareness. Memory in silence is based on the thoughts of Aldo Rossi, emotions in silence on Luis Barragan, spirit in silence on Louis Kahn and self-awareness on Tadao Ando. I suggest that by taking the journey presented through the architecture of my design project, a person might be prompted to look back to his/her memories, the times he/she spent with the ones that person loved. The journey is defined by an individual’s identity. The architecture stands as merely a canvas waiting for its inhabitant to illustrate or illuminate it with his colourful memories. It is a dialogue between the user and the structure in silence that speaks of their desires, their nostalgia. The architecture does not define itself, but bases its purpose of existence on the memories, identity and spirit of the inhabitant. In the example explored in my thesis, the silence of memory, the silence of emotions in serenity, the silence of the spirit and silence of self-awareness are built based on layers of personal photographs from the past that breathe life to the architecture. This thesis examines the immeasurable reminiscence of life through multiple layers of design strategies. |
