Abstract:
This thesis investigates the life and character of Hone Mohi Tawhai by drawing
on, amongst other sources, his own writings. It also includes original translations of a
selection of his writings. The primary objectives of this work were to write a brief
biography of the subject using some of his writings as insight into his character, and to
provide a translation of some of his letters and articles. In order to accomplish this, it was
necessary to establish an understanding of the author's personal and professional history
and to investigate the nature and form of his writings.
The thesis is comprised of two main sections - a biography which gives an
account of his life, work and character, and the translation of a selection of writings by
Hone Mohi Tawhai including, an introduction to the content of the letters, their historical
importance and language usage.
